The fact that no bears were killed due to garbage accessibility in Coquitlam last year is being met with cautious optimism from the city's top urban wildlife staffer.

"It's a first in my time with the city, but I don't want to toot our horn yet," said Drake Stephens, Coquitlam's urban wildlife coordinator. "It could be environmental conditions, there may have been a lot of berries out for them, and it may...

Despite his reputation, Harry Gugger doesn’t consider himself a ‘starchitect.’ Architect Harry Gugger is photographed in the lobby of the Old Stock Exchange in Vancouver, British Columbia, Friday, February 22, 2013. Rafal Gerszak for The Globe and Mail (Rafal Gerszak for the globe and mail)

Earlier this month, Switzerland’s star architect, Harry Gugger, was in Vancouver visiting the site of the new office tower he’s designing for Credit Suisse and SwissReal developers.

Mr. Gugger, a world-famous architect who designed the Tate Modern in London, told me he’s been here four times and he’s struck by the craftsmanship of many of our old buildings, including the one he’s modifying for Credit Suisse at 475 Howe Street. In 1929, it became Vancouver’s stock exchange for nearly 20 years, and so, it became known as the Old Stock Exchange.

Most in Metro Vancouver would choose big house, big lot in the suburbs over luxury apartment - survey

VANCOUVER - If I had a million dollars ... I’d buy you a house. (And a new survey suggests I would probably buy you that house with big yard in the suburbs.)

When asked what type of housing they’d buy if given $1 million, 34 per cent of renters and property owners in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley surveyed would rather have a large house and property in a suburban setting, compared with just 12 per cent who would opt for a luxury apartment in the city, according to a Mustel Research Group poll.

The poll, conducted for, a real estate search website owned by Glacier Media Inc., surveyed 561 adults between Feb. 28 and March 12.

Twenty per cent would buy...

Increasingly in our neighbourhoods there are problem properties where persistent, unlawful and dangerous activities threaten neighbourhood safety and security.

These properties may be derelict, or the site of criminal and nuisance activities such as drug production and trafficking, prostitution, unlawful liquor sales, child abuse, unlawful weapons or explosives, and activities conducted by gangs and organized crime.

Now, new provincial legislation introduced on February 21, 2013 promises to target and shut down these properties which:

  • adversely affect the health, safety or security of one or more persons in the community or neighbourhood
  • interfere with the peaceful enjoyment of one or more of the properties in the community...

The hometown of Terry Fox finished 33rd overall on the list, 23 places higher than Coquitlam and 19 spots ahead of Vancouver.

In total, 200 cities were on the list.

Only North Vancouver finished higher than PoCo in B.C., ranking at 21.

PoCo Mayor Greg Moore said he was pleased with the recognition.

The Save-On-Foods store at Station Square mall—once jokingly known as Cave-On-Foods for the collapse of its rooftop parking lot on opening day— is now a pile of rubble.

The closure and demolition happened earlier than originally expected, but Save-On plans to return one day to the redeveloped site.

Anthem Properties, which is redeveloping the mall with Beedie Development, had previously said the supermarket would stay open during construction and eventually move into a new space in the first phase of the project being built at the northeast corner of the property.

Instead, Save-On's parent company, Overwaitea...
