11 crazy new foods at the 2015 Fair at the PNE

One of the most exciting attractions at the annual Fair at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) in Vancouver is always its heart-stopping food vendors. And when we say heart-stopping, we mean the kind of foods that could very well lead to a major heart blockage.

With fair food trying to outdo itself year after year, the PNE is a great place to find all sorts of outrageous creations and mash-ups that defy all convention of sweet, savoury, and sometimes sane.

Here are 11 new foods you’ll find at the 2015 Fair at the PNE:

Jalapeño Poutine Mini Donuts

Some serious next-level poutine from the mini donuts vendor: They’re adding cheese curds, jalapeño slices, and gravy to a bowl of donuts.

Jurassic Pork
Because all mac and cheese dishes need to be topped with pulled pork and crispy onions, right?

Red Velvet Chicken Strips
For those who don’t believe red velvet jumped the shark at least five years ago is this dish of double-cooked chicken strips with red velvet breading.

PB&J Funnel Cakes
Sure, you can top funnel cakes with berries, but why not make that berry jam and peanut butter?

Bacon on a Bun
Don’t let a pesky burger get in the way: Simplify with Canadian back bacon on a bun, served with fried onions, cheese, and fresh tomatoes.

Slushies plus soft serve equals a frozen treat known as a Screamer. Brain freeze time!

Cactus Burger
This new vendor will have burgers made with cactus leaf, black beans, provolone cheese, roasted garlic mayo, roasted red peppers, sauteed mushrooms, lettuce, caramelized onion, and tomatoes.

Red Velvet Mini Donuts
Few things exemplify fair food than putting it on a stick. So take the trend of red velvet, put it in little donuts, then put those little donuts on a stick, and…voila! Red Velvet Mini Donuts, on a stick.

Fat Elvis

This creation from Rocky Point Ice Cream finds a sweet brioche bun stuffed with chocolate ice cream, local strawberry jam, crunchy peanut sauce, and banana slices, then grilled. Boom!

Montreal Smoked Meat
Not so much on the wild and wacky side, but definitely something we don’t see much of out this way: Authentic Montreal Smoked meat. Piled high on rye with mustard, this is a meat lovers dream.

Maple Bacon Donut Burger
You may want to get your doctor’s permission for this one: Two maple glazed donuts surround a beef patty, American cheese, and bacon.

The PNE blog has details about where to find all of these new foods at the fair, and a complete list of all 2015 PNE food vendors.

The 2015 Fair at the PNE runs Saturday, August 22 to Monday, September 7.
